The Brett Favre Circus

Stunning! “The Dog Days of Summer”  have been replaced this year by: The Brett Favre Final Chapter. With The New York Jets? Yep. Is it any wonder Ryan Grant is a holdout problem now? C’mon! What will Green Bay do? Run the ball, so Aaron Rodgers doesn’t get “booed!” Last year, Ryan Grant gained yards successfully as a decoy due to Favre’s penchant for throwing the long ball, but now opposing teams will be all eyes on the running backs…

The Legend is… no longer with… The Legendary Green Bay Packers. They couldn’t grasp the tension in the life of this aging “gunslinger,” an easy first ballot Hall of Fame QB that simply wasn’t ready to retire - yet. The Lou Gehrig of The NFL, Brett Favre has played with amazing resiliency through injuries that would have easily crippled your average quarterback in this league.

And the Packers now go forward with Aaron Rodgers, whom they believe to be ready to take the helm; for him and for their fans, I sure hope Packers management knows what they were doing. But all signs point to this being a bad idea. And will it really help the Jets improve that much from a 2007 record of 4-12? Can they really expect to make the playoffs? Not likely. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, being successful in the playoffs was a possibility; but The New York Jets will be lucky to improve anymore than an 8-8 finish.

I know bad football, I’m a San Francisco 49ers fan - diehard, from the 2-12 John Brodie days. Thank God for memories of Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Ronnie Lott, Roger Craig… But Brett Favre to the Jets, I feel sorry for him. Is there a “poison pill” in the contract preventing the Jets from trading Favre to either the Vikings or Bears? I’m sure the fans in New York will come out to watch this legendary star - who seems to still be able to inspire & excite fans, and maybe just maybe I am not giving him enough credit that he can lead this group of misfits, motivating them into a more promising future.

All I know is: It’s refreshing that a pro athlete turned down a $20 million personal services contract from the Green Bay Packers to stay retired! Obviously Brett Favre believes he can still sling the rock and kill Goliath. I’ll be watching. How about you? Will Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson have a job next year if Aaron Rodgers is a bust? The NFL will be interesting this year: Giants not likely to repeat without Strahan and Shockey, Cowboys better, Packers with a difficult schedule even with Favre not likely to go 13-3… Stay tuned.
